A SOUTH Tyneside councillor could become South Shields’ first female MP after winning the Labour nomination tonight.
Coun Emma Lewell-Buck has been named as the party’s prospective Parliamentary candidate for the forthcoming by-election.
The
34-year-old, who represents the Primorose ward in Jarrow, won the
nomination after a second ballot as party members met at South Shields
Customs House.
It came on a night of political drama as the man
many had tipped as favourite, Coun Mark Walsh, pulled out ahead of the
vote, citing “personal and family reasons”.
