In the by-election following the death of the Lord Reay, a total of 334
valid votes were cast. There were 2 spoilt ballot papers. All current
members of the House, a total of 753 peers, were eligible to vote. Of
the 23 candidates, 19 received one or more first-preference votes. After
16 transfers of votes, the voting for the final 3 candidates was as
follows:
Lord Borwick 160
Viscount Hailsham 129
Earl of Stockton 61
The successful candidate was therefore Lord Borwick.
