Not something you see every day, but there will be a by election for a new Hereditary Peer which will be held on Tuesday 15th July using the AV voting system.

Hereditary Peers’ By-election
This notice confirms the arrangements for the by-election following the death of Lord
Reay. It also provides the list of candidates for the by-election and candidature
statements where these have been submitted.
Lord Reay was elected under Standing Order
9(2)(ii), among the “15 peers, elected by
the whole House, from among those ready to serve as Deputy Speakers or in any other
office as the House may require”. Therefore, under Standing Order 10(3), the electorate
will be the whole House. In 1999 the Pro
cedure Committee recommended that any peer
elected at a by-election in this category should not be expected to serve as a Deputy
All Members of the House who have taken the Oath, and who are not subject to
statutory disqualification, suspended from the service of the House, or on Leave of
Absence, are entitled to vote in this by-election.
The candidates
Those eligible to be candidates are the here
ditary peers on the Register of hereditary
peers wishing to stand for election as members
of the House of Lords maintained by the
Clerk of the Parliaments.
The deadline for registration of candidature was 5pm on Thursday 27 June 2013.
23 candidates have registered to stand in
this by-election.
